The International Day to Combat Islamophobia is observed annually on March 15, a date chosen to raise awareness about Islamophobia and foster a global dialogue on interfaith harmony. This day was established as a direct result of Pakistan’s persistent efforts, led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who proposed it at the United Nations in 2019, signaling the country’s commitment to promoting tolerance and peace.

Imran Khan's push for the recognition of Islamophobia on the international stage brought global attention to the issue and solidified Pakistan’s leadership in promoting interfaith dialogue and religious tolerance. However, as we approach this day in 2025, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has not yet made an official announcement regarding its plans to commemorate the occasion. This raises the question of how PTI, under its current leadership, plans to continue this legacy of promoting peace and tolerance.

It is a fact that in recent months, PTI has been grappling with internal challenges, including leadership disputes and legal issues. As a result, the party’s connection with the public has started to weaken. Now  International Day to Combat Islamophobia presents an opportunity for PTI to re-engage with the people by actively participating in the observance of this specail day. By doing so, PTI can reaffirm its commitment to global causes and reconnect with its base by showing that it has not wavered from its foundational ideals of tolerance, peace, and the fight against discrimination.

Proposed Actions for PTI on March 15

  1. Organize Public Awareness Campaigns: PTI should take the lead in organizing public discussions, seminars, and panel discussions on Islamophobia and religious intolerance. These gatherings can be used to not only highlight Imran Khan’s role but also to reaffirm PTI’s dedication to combating Islamophobia both at home and abroad.

  2. Social Media Campaigns: Launching a powerful social media campaign would be an effective way for PTI to engage with a broader audience, especially the youth. This campaign can highlight Imran Khan’s efforts, raise awareness about Islamophobia, and call for unity among communities.

  3. National Parliament Acknowledgment: PTI lawmakers should raise the issue in both the National Assembly and the Senate, officially recognizing Imran Khan’s role in the creation of this day. This gesture would reinforce PTI’s commitment to the values of tolerance and interfaith harmony on a national platform.

  4. International Engagement: PTI could organize seminars, rallies, or online forums with international allies, furthering the global dialogue on Islamophobia and strengthening Pakistan’s diplomatic relations by aligning itself with global efforts against discrimination.

Reaffirming PTI’s Legacy on Islamophobia

March 15 serves as more than just a day to raise awareness about Islamophobia; it is a moment for PTI to demonstrate its ongoing commitment to the people of Pakistan and to the global community. By adopting a proactive approach to commemorate this day, PTI can not only honor Imran Khan's legacy but also reinforce its role in promoting global peace, tolerance, and unity.
