Cricket, Politics, and National Pride: Lessons from Champions Trophy 2025

📅 March 9, 2025 | T.M Awan

India has won the Champions Trophy 2025, a first kind of ICC event hosted by Pakistan after a 29-year hiatus. This milestone event marked a significant moment in Pakistan's cricketing revival, demonstrating the country's capability to organize world-class events.

The tournament was a resounding success, with all visiting teams praising the excellent arrangements, robust security, and warm hospitality extended by Pakistan. The event not only boosted Pakistan's economy but also showcased its improved security landscape and modernized cricket infrastructure.

What made the occasion even more special was the overwhelming support from Pakistani fans. Despite the early elimination of the Pakistani cricket team, local fans continued to fill the stadiums and cheer for other teams, demonstrating their unwavering passion for the game and national pride.

India’s Political Move: Denying Pakistan Its Rightful Stage

One unfortunate aspect of the tournament was that India once again politicized the game and refused to come Pakistan come  for Champions Trophy, ultimately forcing the ICC to shift key matches—including the final—to a neutral venue in Dubai.

While all other cricketing nations embraced Pakistan’s hospitality and played without hesitation, India’s refusal was not merely about cricket; it was a political maneuver aimed at undermining Pakistan’s credentials as a host nation.

Champions Trophy Final: Adding Insult to Injury

The final match, originally slated to take place in Lahore, was instead held in Dubai. In a tense encounter, India defeated New Zealand by four wickets to clinch the title. Indian media swiftly capitalized on this outcome, portraying it as a double victory:

This narrative was crafted to diminish Pakistan’s hosting achievement and cast a shadow over its return to the international cricketing arena.

Pakistan’s Weak Response: A Pattern of Submission

In contrast to the overwhelming success of the event and the passionate support from its fans, some circles in Pakistan continue to advocate for improved trade and diplomatic ties with India—often at the expense of national pride. To counter India’s refusal, PCB and certain officials introduced a "hybrid model," claiming that Pakistan would similarly refuse to play in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup in India. However, historical precedents suggest that when faced with mounting pressure, Pakistan’s leadership may once again compromise its stance.

Will Pakistan Hold Its Ground in Future ICC Events?

The critical question remains: Will Pakistan stand firm in future international events, or will it continue to yield to external pressures? Imagine if India declares,

"Play in India, or don’t play at all—there will be no neutral venue."

Would Pakistan maintain its integrity, or would it again succumb to political expediency?

Only time will tell if Pakistan can consistently uphold its principles and secure its rightful place on the global stage.

Nations Are Built by Standing on Principles!

The pakistani must understand that compromising national honor for short-term benefits is a losing strategy. To earn international respect, it must take a firm stand and uphold its principles, even in the face of intense political pressure. The world respects nations that remain steadfast in their convictions, not those that back down under duress.
